Letter from the King of Bhutan

I would like to share these thoughts from the King of Bhutan from a speech that he gave in India:
"I truly believe that the only way to observe the most important things in life and in this world is by putting them through the lens of "Simplicity". You must break everything down to the fundamentals; break it down to the basic human instances. For, in the end no matter what country we may be from, we are human beings.

"No matter what our cultures and beliefs may be, we share the same needs and abide by the same fundamental values. In fact, it may be these very values that could guide us, through the great problems, even those of environmental degradation, terrorism and world poverty. Perhaps the first of these values is the sense of a shared planet.

"This is a world that is shared-not between governments and nations but among us- the people-The image of a shared planet must always be present in our minds-It is wrong to assume that a huge step to finding solutions to global problems and averting future crises, will be taken if we can think in the spirit of community and fraternity, not as individual entities?

"When we accept that this world of people all alike, of families all alike, of communities all alike, of countries facing the same challenges, of human beings ultimately seeking the same thing, then we will truly be in a position to foster well being security and happiness."

A Message From The Great Pyramid Of Giza

Hundreds of tour guides gathered Monday at the nearly deserted Great Pyramid of Giza near Cairo. Their message written on banners in English, French, German and Russian: "Egypt loves you."

Egypt's crucial tourism industry draws 14.7 million visitors a year, accounts for one out of every eight jobs and represents 11% of the nation's economic output. But it has collapsed in the wake of pro-democracy demonstrations.

Egyptian vice president Omar Suleiman estimated tourism-related losses at $1 billion during the first nine days of protests, which have coincided with the country's peak winter season. And ElSayed Khalifa, director of the Egyptian Tourism Authority in New York, said Monday that the economic impact from canceled U.S. trips could top $50 million by the end of April. A record 361,000 Americans visited last year, a 12.5% boost from 2009 and the sixth year-over-year increase.

The Giza pyramids and temples in Luxor and Aswan are open in the wake of Mubarak's departure, and several governments eased their travel warnings to reflect the fact that Sharm el-Sheikh and other Red Sea resorts on the Sinai Peninsula have remained largely isolated from the country's political turmoil.

Memories of Japan

On a recent pilgrimage to Japan we visited Daisen-in Zen Temple in Kyoto and I gave my Obama button to the Abbot of the Monastery Roshi Ozen Oseki. He was delighted and gave me two thumbs up.

On the pilgrimage led by Rev. Kim Kaiser and Rev. Joyce Duffala we stayed at a monastery at Mt. Koya, visited the temple Sanjusagendo (1001) Kuan Yins in Kyoto;and the beautiful Ryonanji Zen Gardens.

We strolled along the "Philosophers Walk" visiting Ginkakuji Temple and visited Daitokuji Zen Temple early that morning. We went to Nara and saw the largest Buddha Image in the world and visited Kurama and soaked in the hotsprings.

My Favorite was visiting Daitokuji and visiting with Roshi Oseki.

First, everyone of JTB GMT delivers the deepest sympathy and condolences to all the victims and their families, particularly to those in Tohoku and East-Kanto regions, affected by the earthquake and Tsunami of March 11, or the strongest ones ever measured in Japan’s modern history.

Sadly, Tohoku region that was widely devastated and is yet to be restored. However, most of social structures such as public transports, electricity and travel-related facilities like leading hotels/restaurants in and around Tokyo have almost returned to normal with no more planned electricity outage foreseen for now, except aftershocks that are continuing at the seismic scale of about 2 or 3, much lower than the strongest one of March 11 having marked "6 plus or so". Meanwhile, the regions to the west from Tokyo were much less affected by the disasters, therefore, travel related structures and facilities remain almost 100% as before, there.

Now, another issue, not the least, that is annoying us is the ongoing trouble of Fukushima Electric Plant. How it is evolving is just as you are learning through media's news that must be daily and worldwide released to overseas as well. Its earliest resolution is strongly hoped, leading to easing everyone’s concern.

As such, the spring travel season (or the months of March to May) of this year started with the sad circumstances, and following them, our business is also damaged. Even under these particular circumstances, JTB GMT pledges you to keep standing firm as a stronghold of inbound tourism to Japan. At the same time, it looks forward very much to everything being returned on regular track everywhere here and a come back of visitors to Japan as early as possible, soliciting renewing your understanding on Japan's tourist appeals, particularly focusing on four clear-cut seasons with 3 months each in duration as well as different weathers and attracts.

I say that with regret, and a bit of selfishness, because although the country is slowly opening up to the modern world with a fine balance of ancient traditions, I've felt fortunate to be among those who have experienced this country in pristine state.

Bhutan is the last bastion of Vajrayana school of Mahayana Buddhism, which provides the essense of a unique identity for the 750,000 people of Bhutan.

Bhutan is called the "Land of the Thunder Dragon" and is a trekkers paradise with a pristine ecology and is home to rare and endangered flora and fauna. Those fortunate enough to visit Bhutan describe it as a unique, deeply spiritual and mystical experience.

Kuan Yin

Jim,

Words can't thank you enough for the fabulous vacation you delivered to me. I took away so much that will remain in my heart and soul forever!!! I was looking for rest and relaxation and this experience gave me both. Even with all the events and Temples we visited I am still renewed. We were on the move just enough. I had 4 massages in 10 days!! I was to swim in the beautiful swimming pools or the ocean without leaving our hotel. Able to go shopping or lay by the pool without having to worry about how to get from point A to B, your guys covered us at all times. Air condition vans were easy to obtain when needed, with just a call from shopping.

I am a well seasoned traveler and am not impressed easily. BUT you impressed me!! I must say the hotels were fantastic, the Komaneka at Bisma topped any 5 star I've stayed in. The food was delicious. Never would I dream I would love getting up at early thirty to do yoga and yet I bounced out of bed and could not wait to start another day. I wanted to get away and renew my soul, you made this possible. The hotels were well chosen, the first on the beach so comfortable. The second was beyond any 5 star I've stayed at. Even the Hyatt of Bali was outstanding with the 5 pools.

The only problem is now I must diet, from all the delicious food I ate. Really it was by far better then I expected.

Jim with all your experience and connections in Bali, you’re able to offer people, places and events that the ordinary tourist would never possibly find.

I could go on for pages but will end it with a giant THANK YOU ... I really had a VACATION to remember. I loved not having to worry about one little thing!!! You had it all covered!!!

Balinese Hindu Dharma

The aim of Hindu Dharma is to reach peace of spirit and harmony in this material life.
